1. What do you understand by digital marketing?

Digital marketing is the process of marketing products/services online. Digital marketing leverages different platforms such as search engines, social media platforms, email, sms, forums, blogs and other websites to establish interaction with new audience in order to gain traffic and conversions.

2. What are the different branches in digital marketing?

Digital marketing is divided into many branches and some of the branches are Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Email Marketing, Pay Per Click(PPC), Affiliate Marketing, Influencer Marketing, Content Marketing and Search Engine Marketing(SEM).

3. What do you know about SEO?

SEO is the process of Optimizing a web page or a website in order to rank them for specific keywords in Search Engine ranking pages(SERP).

SEO is further divided into two categories, off-page SEO and on-page SEO.

a) Off-Page SEO – As the name suggests, all the efforts in Optimizing are done off the page such as creation of backlinks.

b) On-Page SEO – All the efforts in Optimizing are done on the page/website such as Page Speed Optimization, Content Creation, Internal Links, Keyword Optimization and more.

4. How would you do content marketing?

There are many ways to do content marketing, the type we choose would depend on our audience and our product/service.

For promoting women’s apparel, I would prefer Pinterest and Facebook for content promotion. I will also write detailed blog posts on womens fashion and use IGTV for Style tips videos.

Pro Tip: Your answer to this question should be relevant to the company for which you are interviewing. You should not tell that Pinterest would be the first choice for a HVAC company.

5. Why do you want to in Digital Marketing Industry?

Pro Tip: Your answer should always be genuine so that the interviewer knows about your passion for digital marketing.

6. Do you have any technical certifications that will help you in Digital Marketing?

Tell the interviewer about your certifications.

If you do not have any certifications, this might be a good time to get some however I would like you to know that a certification is not a guarantee that you will get a job.

Tell the interviewer about the things that you have achieved in your previous jobs.

Examples of achievements are:

a) Grown a new Instagram account from 0 to 3000 followers in one month

b) Increased the conversions of a lead magnet page from 25% to 40%

c) Wrote a 2000 word detailed post and ranked it in 3 months on top 3 SERP’s

Pro Tip: Don’t lie about your achievements as it will result in your termination at your new job or/and your reputation will be lost once your lie is found.

8. Which tasks do you prefer doing in Digital Marketing?

Pro Tip: Don’t say you like all the things.

Tell the interviewer about 3-4 things that you like doing, it can be designing and sending converting emails or setting up ads on facebook.

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

Tell the interviewer about your dreams, aspirations and future plans.

Example:

I see myself as a team leader handling a team 10-12 members and leading multiple campaigns.

I also plan to attain PMP certification so that I can improve my project management skills while leading a team.

10. What are the different types of analytics programs and which is your favorite and why?

There are many analytics programs to choose from, my favorite are google analytics and hotjar.

I am proficient in using Google Analytics, Hotjar, Crazy Egg, Kissmetrics and Adobe Analytics.

Pro Tip: You don’t have to know each and every analytics program, but you must be proficient in at least 1-2 programs because once you state your proficiency, the interviewer will ask follow-up questions about your favorite tools.

11. How to keep yourself updated with Digital Marketing?

Tell the interviewer about the website and blogs you read on a regular basis to keep updated about industry trends and news. You can also tell the interviewer about digital marketing books that you like to refer.

Search Engine Land for SEO updates.

12. What is your go-to stack/technical tools you use daily?

Talk about your favorite go-to tools in your daily business life.

13. Can you explain what are these terms PPC, PPI and CTR?

These terms are used when we are creating online ad campaigns.

PPC – Pay Per Click – indicates cost per click incurred

PPI – Pay Per Install – indicates cost per install incurred (generally for mobile app installs)

CTR – Conversion Rate – indicates the conversion rates

These terms are used when we are using online advertising.

Example of conversion rate calculation:

If 100 visitors came to a specific webpage and 10 visitors purchased/subscribed, the conversion rate would be 10%

14. Can you name at least 4 search engines?

Google, Bing, Yahoo and Duckduckgo.

15. How do you set-up local visibility of a company in Google?

The local visibility of a company can be set-up using Google My Business.

It requires that we verify the business and its address.

16. What is the difference between Google Analytics and Google Search Console?

Google analytics gives us the data for the interactions which are done on our web properties whereas google search console gives us information about keyword queries, technical errors and backlinks of our properties.

17. How do you solve a problem if you have not encountered it before or do not have a solution to it?

Pro Tip: These kind of questions are asked to gauge your problem solving skills. So think hard before you answer. Don’t copy/paste.

Give the interviewer an example of a problem you have solved earlier, if you cannot come up with an example, then explain a hypothetical situation.

Example:

While doing SEO for an international client, I came across a unique problem. The meta description of the pages was not displaying as I had set. I changed multiple SEO plugins and also tried in different browsers but I was unable to solve the problems.

I consulted some of my digital marketing friends and queried on some forums to solve the problem, I came to know the specific wordpress theme our client was using had some bugs and compatibility issues with some of the plugins we were using, so I contacted the developers of the theme and the problem was solved in less than a week.

18. How do you create a Landing page and know that it will convert?

A landing page can be created with various methods.

A simple method would be to create it with HTML, but with hundreds of plugins available, creating a landing page is much easier now.

I use clickfunnels to create high converting landing pages and sales funnels.

I use Clickfunnels, leadpages and elementor to create high converting landing pages.

We would never know if a landing page is high converting unless we test it with other landing pages. Typical A/B tests will provide us a high converting landing page statistics.

19. What is a lead magnet and how do you create it?

A lead magnet is often described as an ethical bribe.

A free E-Book, video training or softwares are often offered in exchange for a user contact details such as name, email, mobile or address for permission based marketing and this offering is known as Lead Magnet.

We can use softwares or Private Label Rights (PLR) products to create lead magnets or we can also create them with scratch according to our needs.

20. What is Adwords?

Google Adwords is now called as Google Ads.

It is the most profitable program of Google.

Users can advertise their products/services on Google SERP and other properties in order to gain traffic to their properties.

21. Explain about Facebook/Instagram Advertising?

Facebook and instagram are popular social media platforms each having more than a billion users.

They offer various styles of advertising such as text ads and video ads, we have many options to choose from when showing our ads.

The USP of Facebook/Instagram is their huge audience and laser targeting.

Example:

We can choose entrepreneurs aged between 50-60 with income over $500,000 yearly and are interested in investments.

22. What are some of the popular advertising networks?

Google Ads, Facebook/Instagram Advertising, Yahoo Gemini, linkedIn and one by AOL.

23. Which CMS do you use for building websites?

Let the interviewer know your expertise in one of your favorite CMS.

Example: WordPress, Joomla, Shopify and Woo-Commerce.

24. Which are your favorite chrome/firefox extensions?

Tell the interviewer about your favorite extensions and browser.

Example:

I use chrome for personal and business work.

My go-to chrome extensions are SEO Quake for SEO, Ghostery to check trackers, LastPass for passwords, Evernote for note taking/screenshots and Copy all URL’s to copy/paste bulk URL’s.

25. How do you increase traffic to a website, explain different methods?

There are mainly two ways to increase traffic.

a) Organic Methods – Growing organic traffic is a long-term strategy. Unique content creation on website and social media, Website SEO, blog Commenting, Guest Posts and Forum engagement.

b) Paid Methods – Growing traffic with paid media requires capital and advertising experience. Burning money without getting any results is the formula for the inexperienced marketer. So, we have to be careful how and where we spend the money on ads. Some of the most popular advertising platforms would be Google, Facebook and Instagram.
